Flabob Airport Field Trips

Flabob Airport is proud to offer field trips to all kids from Elementary school through High scool! Here at Flabob our focus is inspiring kids through aviation!

Flabob High Powered Rocketry Program

The rocket lab at Tom Wathen Center was developed to foster the next generation of rocket engineers and technicians by exposing students to the industry and the career opportunities available. Classes are free of charge and open to students 8-18 years of age.

  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
    At the Flabob Rocket Lab we are exposing students to solid and liquid fueled rockets through onsite classes and internships. There will be approximately three class sessions throughout each year. Each session consists of an 9-week course in which classes are held once per week in the afternoon. The first three weeks of each session includes students from the age of 8 to 18 years old. The remaining six weeks of instruction take a deeper dive into subjects that are better suited for more advanced students. The first 3 weeks of instruction include rocket components, tools and measurement, assembly, weight, balance, and stability. The remaining six weeks of instruction cover more in-depth aerodynamics, propulsion systems, engine testing, avionics, recovery systems, and finally data collection and analysis. Through collaboration with Friends of Amateur Rocketry (FAR) we have access to their world class rocket test and launch facility in the Mojave desert, just North of Edwards Air Force Base. Email Rocketry@flabob.org for more details and to reserve your spot in the upcoming sessions. Class sizes are currently limited to 5-10 students per session.

Red Barn Aviation

This program is available for students 14 & 1/2 years or older. In these restoration projects, small groups of students under close and expert adult supervision have fun and learn restoration skills. The group meets on Saturday mornings.

Youth Opportunity Program

Certified instructors work hand in hand with misguided and disadvantaged youth Students are taught basic structural repair, fabric covering prep and paint. Two programs of this nature are available; auto-body and aircraft restoration.

Air Academy

This program geared for middle and high school students provides a broad introduction to aviation science including weather, navigation, and the principals of flight.  Programs include a number of hands-on activities and 3 day Air Academy culminates an EAA Chapter One Young Eagles airplane flight.

Young Eagles 

The Young Eagles flight program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people ages 8 through 17 the opportunity to enjoy the thrill of flying in a general aviation airplane.  The Tom Wathen Center supports Flabob Airport’s EAA Chapter One in providing free airplane rides made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers.
